Medieval Tiles

Biscuit (cookie) flavour: Honey, ginger, and cloves

Decoration: Royal icing base. All designs piped in royal icing and/or painted by hand with gel food colourings.

Context: Inspired by medieval tiles in the collections of the British Museum, specifically:

  1. Wall painting from St Stephen’s Chapel, London. c.1350-63.
  2. The Tring Tiles, England. c.1330.
  3. Early relief tile from St Albans, England. c.1151-66.
  4. Earthenware floor tile, Malvern. c.1451-60.
  5. The Tristram Tiles, Chertsey, Surrey, England. c.1260s-70s.
  6. Decorated tile pavement from Burton Lazars, Leicestershire. c.1450-1525.
  7. Tile with queen (possibly representing Philippa of Hainault, wife of Edward III), England. c.1330-50.
  8. Tiles commissioned by an abbot, Gloucestershire (found near Hailes Abbey). c.1525-40.
  9. Decorated tile pavement from Burton Lazars, Leicestershire. c.1450-1525.
  10. The Queen’s Pavement, Clarendon Palace. c.1251-52.
  11. Great Malvern Priory wall tiles, Malvern. c.1458-9.
