Biscuit (cookie) flavour: Orange, cardamom, and vanilla
Decoration: Royal icing base. Portraits painted by hand using gel food colourings and vodka.
Context: Inspired by two portraits of Jane Austen:
- Left: an unfinished watercolour sketch taken from life by Cassandra Austen, Jane’s elder sister.
- Right: the beautified portrait featuring on the British £10 note, which is based on the frontispiece to A Memoir of Jane Austen (1869).
The turquoise, gold, and pearl frame on the Cassandra-inspired biscuit is inspired by the design of a bracelet in the Jane Austen’s House collection, believed to have belonged to Jane. I used a pattern featuring on the £10 note as inspiration for the frame surrounding the beautified biscuit portrait.
These biscuits were created as part of the Jane Austen’s House Creatives in Residence programme.
