Embroidered Gauntlets: 3

A set of four biscuits made to look like the decorative cuff of an early modern glove. Each biscuit is iced in the same maroon-red icing and embellished with details that look like pearls, silver-gilt threads, and bobbin lace. The top row features three rectangular biscuits with a diamond-shaped motif at the centre of each one. Below is a single long rectangle decorated with a row of stylised flowers.

Biscuit (cookie) flavour: Based on a recipe for metheglin (flavoured mead), an ancient drink said to have been enjoyed by Elizabeth I. Ingredients include honey, lemon, rosemary & thyme.

Decoration: Royal icing base. All designs piped in royal icing by hand and embellished with edible lustres and vodka.

Context: Inspired by a pair of gloves in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum. The gloves date from c.1600-1625; their decorative cuffs (or ‘gauntlets’) are made of maroon satin, silver-gilt threads, pearls, spangles, and bobbin lace. You can see a photograph of the original gloves here.
